Birdwell is a South Yorkshire village just 2km from Barnsley, easily reached via the A628 from the town centre or the A61 from Sheffield. Long-distance visitors use Junction 36 of the M1, then follow the A61 through Tankersley. The former colliery site now serves as a nature reserve, with the original pit wheels preserved as industrial heritage monuments.
