Angels is a historic Gold Rush town in the Sierra Nevada foothills, about 130 miles east of San Francisco via Highway 4. The main route from the Bay Area follows I-580 to Highway 4 through Stockton and the Central Valley. Local residents commute west on Highway 4 to valley jobs, while the highway continues east toward mountain recreation areas. The town inspired Mark Twain's famous jumping frog story after he visited the Angels Hotel in 1865.
