Alwinton sits in remote Coquet Dale, deep in the Cheviot Hills near the Scottish border. Reach it via the B6341 from the A697, a scenic route through Northumberland National Park that climbs steadily from Rothbury. The village marks the end of the road before wild moorland takes over, making it popular with walkers heading into the border country. Each October, Alwinton hosts the traditional Border Shepherds' Show, featuring dog trials and tup competitions.
