Uachdar

Ireland
Uachdar occupies the centre of Benbecula, the small island linking North and South Uist in the Outer Hebrides. The A865 runs straight through, connecting ferry terminals at Lochmaddy and Lochboisdale, whilst Benbecula Airport sits practically next door. The flat machair landscape and scattered lochs create classic Hebridean scenery, though Atlantic weather systems can change conditions rapidly. The village name means "upper part" in Gaelic, referring to its slightly elevated position above the surrounding plains that regularly flood in winter.
