The single-track road winds through spectacular Pennine scenery, though the nearest motorway is 45 minutes away at Kirkby Stephen. Most visitors are touring the Yorkshire Dales or walking the Pennine Way, which passes through the village. The stone cottages and traditional barns sit at 300 metres elevation amongst the fells. Thwaite was the birthplace of the Kearton brothers, Victorian pioneers of wildlife photography.
