The Soke forms part of Winchester's northern suburbs, easily reached via the A34 or M3 from London and Southampton. This residential area sits where the South Downs begin to rise, about two miles from Winchester's famous cathedral. The medieval term "soke" referred to a special administrative jurisdiction with independent legal rights.
