The Dene occupies a quiet spot in County Durham between Newcastle and Consett, accessible via the A692 which links local communities. The A691 from Newcastle and connections from the A68 corridor serve longer-distance visitors, whilst locals use these same routes for the 20-kilometre commute to Newcastle. The area sits near the Derwent Walk, an 11-mile former railway path following the River Derwent.
