Tenston occupies a central spot on Orkney's Mainland, connected to Kirkwall by the A986 and surrounded by neighbouring communities like Hestwall and Croval within a few kilometres. The A967 heads west towards the dramatic cliffs at Yesnaby, whilst local roads link the cluster of settlements that characterise this part of the islands. The area retains one of Orkney's working traditional water mills, its stone wheel still operational during high water periods.
