Tanfield is a former County Durham mining village positioned on elevated ground southwest of Newcastle. The A692 provides the main connection, accessed via the A693 from Newcastle or A691 from Durham. Long-distance visitors use the A1(M) corridor. Electric vehicle charging is well-covered with over 300 fast chargers regionally. The village is home to Tanfield Railway, one of the world's oldest existing railways, which still runs heritage steam services along the original 1725 route.
