Swannay is a small settlement on Orkney's Mainland, reached via the A967 from Kirkwall or Stromness in about 20 minutes. The area sits amongst Orkney's rolling farmland, with the dramatic northwestern coastline and its archaeological treasures nearby. The neighbouring settlement of Abune-the-Hill, just a kilometre away, takes its name from the area's gently undulating landscape.
