Struan perches on North Uist's northwestern coast in the Outer Hebrides, where Atlantic winds shape both landscape and daily life. Reaching it requires island-hopping via ferry from Skye to Lochmaddy, then following the A867 and A865 west for 25 kilometres across flat machair grasslands. The distinctive beaches here are formed from crushed seashells rather than ordinary sand.
