Sharpsburg is a small river town eight miles northeast of Pittsburgh, reached via Route 28 north along the Allegheny River or Route 8 from the east. Long-distance visitors typically use I-76 or the Pennsylvania Turnpike, connecting through Pittsburgh's road network. The borough sits on a narrow strip between the river and steep hills, creating an intimate community feel. Its Main Street commercial district remains one of the few intact traditional business strips left in Allegheny County.
