Shafter sits in California's Central Valley about 18 miles northwest of Bakersfield along Highway 43. Take Highway 99 to the Shafter-Lerdo exit, then head west into town surrounded by cotton fields and almond orchards. The city serves as a convenient stop between LA and the Bay Area via Highway 43's connection to Interstate 5. Shafter is the birthplace of the Bing cherry, developed here in the 1870s.
