Scalloway, the former capital of Shetland, lies 6 miles west of Lerwick on the A970. This sheltered harbour town serves as the gateway to western Mainland Shetland, with roads branching off to coastal communities. The dramatic ruins of Scalloway Castle, built by the notorious Earl Patrick Stewart in 1600, tower over the town centre.
