Rye perches on a hill above Romney Marsh, reached via the A259 coastal road or A268 from the Kent countryside. This former Cinque Port draws visitors along the A21 from London (65 miles) and day-trippers from Brighton via the coast road. The town's medieval streets climb steeply from the surrounding flatlands, with Mermaid Street's wonky timber houses creating one of England's most photographed cobbled lanes.
