Portroe

Ireland

Ireland

Portroe sits along Lough Derg's western shore in Tipperary, where the Shannon widens into Ireland's largest inland lake. You'll reach it via the R494 from Nenagh, about 15 kilometres southwest, or from Limerick by taking the N7 north and cutting across on regional roads. The village makes a grand base for exploring the lough, popular with boaters and anglers navigating the Shannon system. Tucked beneath the Arra Mountains, Portroe once supplied oak timber for building traditional cots, the flat-bottomed boats designed specially for fishing these waters.
