Newtimber sits in the South Downs about 10km northwest of Brighton, accessible via the A23 then local roads through Pyecombe or Poynings. The village lies within the South Downs National Park, surrounded by chalk hills and ancient woodlands. St. John the Evangelist church contains remarkable 13th-century wall paintings that survived the Reformation.
