Modder River

South African English DESCRIPTION Modder River, just south of Kimberley on the N8, is more a stopover than a destination, but history buffs will know it as the site of the 1899 Battle of Modder River during the Anglo-Boer War. It's on the main drag between Kimberley and Bloemfontein, so long-haul travelers heading to Gauteng or down to the Cape often pass through. Flat, dry Karoo-edge farmland surrounds it, so fill up before you carry on, EV chargers are scarce out here.
