Merkel is a small West Texas town of about 2,700 people located 17 miles west of Abilene on Interstate 20. The main route in is I-20, with Highway 126 running north-south through town. It's a 20-minute commute to Abilene and serves as a convenient stop for long-distance travelers crossing Texas. The restored 1927 railroad depot now houses the town museum.
