Martinez sits on Highway 4 about 30 miles northeast of San Francisco, where the road crosses the Carquinez Strait via the Benicia-Martinez Bridge. Interstate 680 provides the main north-south route through town. Most visitors arrive from the Bay Area on Highway 4 or from other East Bay cities via I-680. The drive from San Francisco takes about 45 minutes, while Sacramento is 90 minutes east. The city preserves John Muir's final home as a national historic site.
