Langholm sits in the Scottish Borders where the River Esk cuts through Dumfriesshire hills, about 20 kilometres north of England. The A7 Edinburgh-Carlisle road runs straight through town, with Hawick 35 kilometres north and Carlisle 30 kilometres south. Roughly 9 EV chargers serve the area for cross-border journeys. The town hosts an annual Common Riding where hundreds of riders follow ancient boundary routes on horseback through the surrounding hills.
