Knowefield forms part of Carlisle's northern suburbs, sitting where the Eden Valley opens onto the Solway Plain. The A7 provides the main route through the area, connecting central Carlisle 3km south with the Scottish border at Gretna. The nearby Roman bath house at Castlesteads links the modern settlement directly to Hadrian's Wall heritage.
