Kilfenora sits in County Clare about 50 kilometres northwest of Ennis via the R476, making it a handy base for exploring the Burren's limestone terrain and the Atlantic coast. Most visitors arrive from Galway city, taking the N18 south to Gort, then the R460 and R476 through Tubber and Corofin, a 65-kilometre journey that shows the shift from Galway's green fields to Clare's distinctive karst country. The town calls itself the "City of the High Crosses" for its collection of medieval stone crosses, including four 12th-century examples around the ruined cathedral with Celtic knotwork still clear after 800 years.
