Wivenhoe perches on the Colne estuary seven kilometres southeast of Colchester, accessible via the A12 to A133 to B1028 route or local roads from surrounding villages. The town serves London commuters through its direct rail link to Liverpool Street, whilst the historic quayside features distinctive Georgian houses facing the water where the university's original campus overlooks the valley.
