South Wilmington is a small river town of 600 people in Grundy County, about 60 miles southwest of Chicago via I-55 and Route 53. The main access is Route 53, which runs north-south through town and connects to Joliet for commuter traffic. Most long-distance visitors take I-55 to Exit 241, then follow Route 53 south about 10 miles. The town's historic one-lane steel bridge over the Kankakee River, built in 1930, still carries local traffic today.
