Prestonpans lies on East Lothian's coast, 10 miles east of Edinburgh via the A1. This former salt and mining town faces the Firth of Forth with decent views across to Fife. The A199 coast road runs through the centre, whilst the A1 junction provides quick access for longer trips. Rail connections to Edinburgh take about 20 minutes. The 17th-century Mercat Cross, topped with an ornate unicorn, remains the town's finest architectural feature.
