Lamesa serves as Dawson County's seat in West Texas, positioned where US Highway 87 and State Highway 137 intersect on the South Plains. Most visitors drive up from Big Spring 40 miles south or down from Lubbock 60 miles north on US 87, passing through endless cotton fields. The city's golden tornado water tower, painted to honor the high school mascot, rises prominently above the flat landscape.
