Lake Tapps is a planned community in Pierce County built around a man-made reservoir about 25 miles southeast of Tacoma. Take I-5 south to Highway 18 east, then Highway 169 south to reach the lake area. The 2,400-acre lake was created in 1911 for hydroelectric power, and water levels still fluctuate based on the adjacent power plant's operational needs.
