It sits in the heart of the limestone karst country with its seasonal turloughs that fill and empty throughout the year. The area serves as a good base for exploring the Burren, with plenty of walking trails and archaeological sites scattered about the limestone terrain. The village is famous for its 12th-century church ruin featuring one of Ireland's finest sheela-na-gig carvings above the doorway, a mysterious medieval stone figure that draws visitors from across the country.
