Most visitors arrive via the A691 from Durham or the A692 from Consett, with good connections to the A1(M) at Chester-le-Street. The village sits amongst rolling Durham hills dotted with other former pit settlements like Tantobie and Mountsett. The former Dipton Colliery once employed over 1,000 miners before closing in 1980.
