Athelney

Athelney occupies a small rise in the Somerset Levels, historically significant as King Alfred's refuge from Vikings in 878 AD. Reach it via the A361 from Taunton (10km northeast), with most visitors approaching from M5 Junction 25. The flat wetland landscape can flood in winter, and there are roughly 60 EV charging points in the wider area. A simple stone monument marks where Alfred's fort once stood.
