Access is via the A6024 Woodhead Road, about 6 miles southwest of Huddersfield town centre, with good connections to Manchester (45 minutes) and Leeds (under an hour). The original 18th-century stone bridge over the River Holme remains the village's centrepiece and gives it its name.
