About Achill Sound (Gob a' Choire)
Achill Sound marks the gateway to Ireland's largest island, connected to the mainland by the Michael Davitt Bridge over tidal waters. The N59 from Westport offers the most direct route at 42 kilometers, passing through Mulrany along Clew Bay's shore. From Dublin, take the M4 and M6 to Castlebar, then join the N59. The R319 from Newport provides a coastal alternative winding through small villages. EV charging is available in Westport and Castlebar, so plan accordingly for this rural stretch. The original swing bridge operated manually until 1949, with a keeper hand-cranking it open for boats.
