Houlland is a small settlement on Yell's eastern shore, reached via the A968 from Ulsta ferry terminal. The journey from Lerwick involves ferries and takes about an hour including connections. Local routes serve nearby villages within a few kilometers, whilst longer trips require ferry connections to other islands. The settlement overlooks the Sound of Yell, where strong tidal currents create distinctive whirlpools visible from shore.
