Highgate forms part of Hayfield on the Peak District's edge, where moorland meets the Goyt Valley. The A624 Snake Pass provides the scenic route from Manchester, whilst the A6 via Buxton serves southern approaches. Most journeys are local hops under 30km to surrounding market towns, though weekend walkers arrive from further afield. The village sits directly beneath Kinder Scout, site of the pivotal 1932 mass trespass that opened Britain's uplands to ramblers.
