Helmington Row is a small County Durham village between Crook and Bishop Auckland, reached via the A689 from either direction. Newcastle drivers use the A1(M) to Junction 61, then A688 west to A689. The village sits on the site of former Helmington Colliery, closed in 1967, with the old railway embankment still visible across nearby fields.
