Heatherycleugh lies in upper Weardale amongst the North Pennine fells, reached via the A689 through Stanhope then minor valley roads. Long-distance routes include the A68 from Newcastle via Corbridge, or the A686 through Allendale. Winter driving requires care on the higher ground, and EV users should note the 14 fast chargers in the wider area. The name derives from the Scots "cleugh," meaning narrow valley.
