Goat lies in Cumbria's Derwent Valley, just outside Cockermouth near the northern Lakes. The A66 from Penrith and M6 provides main access, whilst the A595 coastal route offers scenic approaches from Workington. Local roads connect easily to Papcastle and surrounding valley communities. The settlement's name derives from medieval goat herding on the surrounding hillsides, where hardy mountain goats once grazed the bracken slopes above the River Derwent.
