Gilmonby

Gilmonby lies along the A66 trans-Pennine route in County Durham's northern uplands, a kilometre from Bowes village. The A66 connects west to Penrith and the M6, east to Scotch Corner and the A1(M), making it a key crossing point between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Local access comes via the A67 from Barnard Castle, eight kilometres southeast through the Tees valley. The name derives from Old Norse, meaning a Viking-era farmstead that's stood here for over a millennium.
