Garnkirk lies in North Lanarkshire between Chryston and Muirhead, connected primarily via the M80 motorway. The M8 junction at Stepps provides quick access to Glasgow city centre, whilst the A80 serves routes north to Cumbernauld and Stirling. The village's claim to fame is its preserved railway bridge from the pioneering Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway, one of Scotland's first passenger lines from 1831.
