Freeport lies in northwestern Illinois farm country, about 25 miles west of Rockford via US Route 20. Most visitors arrive on US 20 from either direction or take I-39 to the US 20 exit near Rockford. The city sits amid rolling prairie dotted with corn and soybean fields. Freeport hosted the second Lincoln-Douglas debate in 1858 at Taylor Park downtown.
