Fort Benton, known as the "Birthplace of Montana," sits on the Missouri River about 40 miles northeast of Great Falls via US 87. This former frontier trading post served as the head of steamboat navigation and briefly as Montana's territorial capital in 1865. The town's historic Front Street features original stone buildings from the 1880s, including the Grand Union Hotel with its intact pressed-tin ceiling.
