Ettersgill sits in upper Teesdale along the B6277, about 25 miles northwest of Barnard Castle. This remote County Durham settlement provides access to the North Pennines AONB through winding single-track roads. The main approach follows the B6277 from Middleton-in-Teesdale, whilst northern routes from Alston involve steep, narrow passages. The village occupies a remarkable position where ancient drovers' roads converge, with medieval stone boundaries still marking 600-year-old grazing rights.
