El Mesquite is a tiny border community of 32 people in Starr County, about 15 miles southwest of Rio Grande City via US 83 and county roads. The subtropical location along the Rio Grande brings hot summers and mild winters. Most visitors drive from McAllen or Brownsville (90 minutes) or San Antonio (4 hours via I-35 to US 83). The community operates one of the few remaining hand-operated ferry crossings on the Rio Grande.
