Chowdene forms part of Gateshead's suburban sprawl south of the Tyne, easily reached via the A1(M) or A692 through Low Fell. The A167 provides alternative access to Newcastle city centre. Newcastle Airport sits 15km northwest, whilst Team Valley retail park with its IKEA store lies practically next door. The old Pithead Baths building, now an auto parts shop, still displays its original colliery entrance railings.
