Carter Lake is Iowa's geographic oddball, completely surrounded by Nebraska after the Missouri River shifted course in 1877. From Omaha, take I-480 west to Abbott Drive, then head north three miles. Most long-distance visitors fly into Eppley Airfield, eight miles southeast. It's the only Iowa city west of the Missouri River, making Nebraska more accessible than the rest of Iowa.
