Canonbie lies in the Scottish Borders near the English frontier, positioned along the A7 between Carlisle and Hawick. This small Esk Valley town sits at a historic crossing point where ancient drove roads once carried cattle between the two countries. The A7 provides the main route for long-distance travellers, whilst local roads connect to Langholm and Newcastleton. The town centre features Canonbie Bridge, an elegant 1875 stone arch spanning the River Esk.
