Cannygates lies in southern Shetland, just 2km from Sumburgh Airport via the A970. It's perfectly placed for exploring the dramatic coastline where Atlantic meets North Sea, with Lerwick 25km north through moorland and scattered crofts. The area experiences Shetland's famous "simmer dim" in summer and fierce winter gales. The name combines "canny" (shrewd) with "gates" (pathways) in old Scots.
