Overview
3About Rankin Inlet, NU
Rankin Inlet has no road link to the rest of Canada, so you fly in through Rankin Inlet Airport (YRT), right in town, with regular service from Winnipeg and Iqaluit, or arrive by sealift in summer. Around town it's all short local drives, a few kilometers at most, connecting the airport, harbour, and residential streets, since there's no road out to Arviat or Whale Cove either. Skip the EV, there's no charging infrastructure and diesel runs everything here. Worth knowing: the town started as a mining settlement around the North Rankin Nickel Mine (1957-1962), one of the few Nunavut communities founded by industry instead of a Hudson's Bay Company post.
