Most people drive in via Highway 1 through Fort Providence, crossing the Mackenzie River before joining Highway 3 north. It's a common day trip for Yellowknifers heading up for appointments or visits, though EV drivers should charge up before leaving since there's nothing reliable along the way. Formed in 2005 from the merger of Rae and Edzo, the town takes its name from the Tlicho word for the Yellowknife River.
